Notable Activity
The General Assembly is preparing to meet next week to take up what is expected to be an extremely limited agenda, though details remain scarce. Both Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger and House Speaker Destin Hall have announced their intent to redraw the state’s congressional district maps, which are expected to garner the most attention. Other legislative priorities that NCACC is pursuing include implementation flexibility for counties now required to perform background checks on any employees who may interact with children, addressing unexpected increases in employer contributions to the State Health Plan, and securing additional Helene recovery resources for Western North Carolina counties.
This week, NCACC staff visited Capitol Hill to continue conversations to speed up federal funding for Helene recovery and to address the impact of the One Big Beautiful Bill on county offices handling Medicaid and SNAP determinations. While the federal shutdown continues to complicate federal activity, our staff were able to have numerous productive conversations with congressional and administrative staffers to ensure that county needs remain a priority for our congressional delegation as they work to serve the state.
