House Select Committee on Property Tax Reduction and Reform Holds First Meeting

The House Select Committee on Property Tax Reduction and Reform held its first meeting on Wednesday, December 17. The committee heard from legislative staff, who provided an overview of North Carolina’s current property tax policy, existing relief programs, and potential alternatives for expanding and reforming relief programs. Several county commissioners attended the meeting, including members of the NCACC Executive Committee.

Housing affordability and rising property tax assessments were central to the committee’s discussion, with concerns about how increasing property taxes affect vulnerable populations, including elderly residents on fixed incomes and disabled veterans. While some committee members emphasized the importance of property taxes for county budgets and local services, alternative property tax relief options were shared, including proposals that could cap property assessments or limit local government expenditures. The NCACC will continue to monitor the discussion as it evolves and will educate state elected officials on the importance of property taxes as a foundational source of revenue for local government operations. The next committee meeting will be held January 14, but the agenda has not yet been set.

NCACC represents North Carolina’s counties at the House Select Committee on Property Tax Reduction and Reform.
