Before they adjourned, the General Assembly identified this week as a potential time to reconvene and handle unfinished business, but only a few legislators returned for a skeleton session, and no votes were taken. Anyone hoping for an issue to be taken up, a gubernatorial veto to be overridden, or a full state budget to be passed will need to wait until late September to see what the legislature does next. Legislators still have plenty left undone from this year’s session, so all eyes will be on the General Assembly when they next return to see what they pick up.
With regular committees on pause until the General Assembly begins its short session in April 2026, leadership has announced appointments to House and Senate interim committees — groups of legislators tasked with receiving reports and discussing policy topics in anticipation of action in the next session. While these committees usually do not advance legislation, their meetings will be a strong indicator of what legislators intend to pick up next year.
