Heroic Hands: Celebrating Public Service (2024-2025 Presidential Initiative)

PITT COUNTY, N.C. – During its 118th Annual Conference in Pitt County, the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) honored local public service heroes through the 2024-2025 presidential initiative, Heroic Hands: Celebrating Public Service, led by then-NCACC President Tare “T.” Davis.

Launched in 2024, the Heroic Hands initiative spotlighted the dedication and impact of county and local government employees across North Carolina. Each of the state’s 100 counties was invited to nominate one individual whose service exemplified the essential role of public sector work in strengthening communities.

Honorees were recognized during the conference’s First Night Celebration, where they were celebrated by county leaders and peers from across the state. The initiative also resulted in a commemorative NCACC publication, Heroic Hands, which showcases stories from a wide range of public service fields — including public health, public safety, parks, libraries, and county administration.

“Public service is more than a job — it’s a calling,” Davis said. “Through Heroic Hands, we wanted to recognize those who serve with dedication and inspire future generations to pursue meaningful careers in public service.”

In addition to the conference recognition, the initiative featured regional events held throughout the year. President Davis traveled across the state, meeting with local leaders, sharing stories of service, and advocating for investment in the public workforce.

The 118th Annual Conference brought nearly 650 county officials, staff, and partners together in Pitt County for three days of learning, networking, and leadership recognition. As NCACC continues its work under new presidential leadership and a new initiative, Heroic Hands stands as a proud reflection of the people who serve our communities every day.
