The Town Government
The Town of Matthews is a full-service municipality that operates under a Council/Manager form of government. The Town Board sets the policies, enacts ordinances, votes the appropriations, and develops the overall vision, which is then carried out under the Town Manager’s direction. The Board consists of seven members including the mayor. The Town Manager is responsible for implementing the Town’s vision, the Board’s policies and managing the Town’s day-to-day operations. The Town Manager works with Board to enhance community input and engagement through nine Boards and commissions.
The Town Manager oversees a staff of 160 full and part-time employees across nine departments. With AAA bond ratings and excellent stewardship of tax dollars, the Town is regarded as a fiscally responsible and well-managed government with a budget of approximately $26.4 M for FY21-22. The hiring range is $140,000- $165,000 based on experience, qualifications, salary history, and track record of success. The Town provides an excellent benefits package. Residency within Town limits is required within a negotiated timeframe.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years increasingly responsible professional experience in local government management of a similarly sized community. A minimum of bachelor’s degree is required while a master’s degree is strongly preferred. Must have a proven track record in effective intergovernmental relations, personal community engagement, economic development successes, leading cohesive and strategic change, visionary leadership, and being adept at leading and implementing strategic planning to meet community goals. ICMA certification is desired.
The Ideal Candidate
As the liaison between Town departments and the Board, the Town Manager offers candid insight and expert analysis to assist the Board in formulating and implementing short- and long-range goals for Town growth management. With a broad scope of professional expertise, the successful candidate has a track record of providing leadership to support the development and management of multiple projects and partnerships and must be an innovative and visionary consensus builder with outstanding judgment, operational and management skills, and integrity.
