Description

The Tax Assessor is appointed by the Martin County Board of Commissioners to have general charge of mapping, listing, appraisal, and assessment of all property in the County in accordance with the provisions of law.  He/She shall perform the duties imposes upon them by law and he/she have and exercise all powers reasonably necessary in the performance of duties not inconsistent with the Constitution or the law of this State.  Work involves directing the County real estate/personal property appraisal and assessment and tax listings.   GIS mapping, planning ad directing the programs and services of the department such as establishing goals, objectives and priorities; planning and allocating department resources and manpower; developing department policies and procedures; developing departmental budgets and managing staff; preparing reports and making presentations to the governing board.  This employee must exercise considerable initiative and independent judgement to ensure effectiveness of the tax program as well as exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the general public, property owners, co-workers and government officials.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Policy, Accounting or a related field preferred, and four years of experience in tax assessment, appraisal or collections, with one to two years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.  Must be certified by the NC Department of Revenue within two years of appointment.
