Under the direction of the IT Director, the Software Engineer is responsible for implementing, testing and supporting new solutions and to modify existing legacy applications written in-house for the Alamance County. Responsibilities include writing code and automated tests, and testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and optimizing new and legacy applications. The developer will work on collaborative and solo projects. The developer is expected to maintain focus and effectively manage time and work to deadlines. The developer is a self-motivated, innovative problem solver who works well with others at all levels, has a passion for coding, and produces well-crafted, clean, lean, easy-to-use software.


  • Develops technical specifications, codes and test plans that meet defined standards and procedures.
  • Creates test plans, test data and conducts unit testing for all programming assignments to ensure programs are working correctly prior to application release.
  • Modifies programs based on end-user needs while recommending efficient design and modifications for best programming guidelines.
  • Assists end-users with technical support and troubleshooting of applications and software.
  • Provides support and maintenance for assigned IT applications
  • Develops ad-hoc reports on an as needed basis.
  • Assists in the installation of software patches, service packs and updates.
  • Provides on-call support for public services throughout the County.
  • Works with project managers as a development resource, meeting timelines and deliverables as assigned.
  • Serves as system administrator for designated software packages.
  • Travels to County sites to provide troubleshooting and technical support.


Salary grade is $52,923 to $84,690. Hiring range will be dependent on experience and skill level of candidate.

Skills & Abilities

Education & Experience:  BS/BA in Information Systems or Computer Science or relevant field required from an accredited college or university desired.  Seeking 4 to 6 years of experience in developing software; or equivalent combination of experience and training.

Computer Skills:  Proficient in MS Office suite of programs. Prior experience desired with: VB.NET, C#, Microsoft SQL, TFS, GIT, HTML5, CSS, JSON, XML, JavaScript, JQuery and Bootstrap.

License/Credentials: Possession of a valid NC driver's license.
