THE TOWN OF MOREHEAD CITY, located on the beautiful Crystal Coast in eastern North Carolina, is currently seeking an energetic, self-motivated, professional, and experienced candidate for the full-time position of PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER.  Morehead City is the largest incorporated town in Carteret County with over 16,625 residents in the City limits and extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) and encompassing 16.85 square miles of land area.  Morehead City is a vibrant community and the Public Information Officer plays a critical role in being the main liaison between the City, our citizens, and the public to communicate information relating to City events, happenings, accomplishments, and other activities.  We are seeking an experienced individual that possesses the ability to be a strategic leader in the vision and implementation of external and internal communication efforts. 


The position of Public Information Officer (PIO) works independently with the public and department team members as the primary spokesperson and media liaison for the City.  This position reports directly to the City Manager.  The PIO job responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Plans and implements the communications and marketing strategies, messaging, and tools needed to build and preserve the image of the City.
  • Actively participates in the planning, promotions and/or implementation of community events and activities.
  • Coordinates the distribution of timely, accurate, and essential information to citizens and the general public.
  • Ensures a cohesive look and consistent message on all materials carrying the City’s name and/or logo.
  • Builds positive relationships with local businesses and local organizations.
  • Acts as coordinator for special initiatives led by Carteret County and other municipalities and/or regional groups as appropriate.
  • Responds, reaches out, and/or corresponds to citizens’ groups, individuals, and organizations to provide public information as necessary.
  • Drafts speeches, press releases, and/or media advisories.
  • Maintains and updates the official City website and other social media platforms.
  • Gathers content, prepares, and distributes the City’s quarterly magazine.
  • Monitors and maintains expenditures under the PIO purview.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external partners.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • The ability to plan and execute creative and innovative ideas.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills specifically expertise in AP style.
  • The ability to take a positive team approach to working with government, community, and business partners.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Adobe software.
  • Thorough knowledge of various social media platforms and the ability to learn the use of back-end website platforms.
  • The ability to write speeches and articles that conform to a professional style and format.
  • The ability to effectively present information to employees, public groups, and/or elected officials.
  • The ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from residents or members of the business community.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department heads, governmental officials, associates, and the general public.





The salary range for this position is $60,193 to $93,900.  Placement within this range will depend upon a candidate’s successful qualifications and experience.  The City provides a comprehensive benefits package which can be found at the City’s website at  


The position requires a bachelor’s degree with coursework in Communications, Public Relations, English or related field and considerable experience in Public Relations/Communications in a fast-paced environment or equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid unrestricted NC driver’s license required.  Background/drug test required.
