The Police Chief, along with the Town’s other department heads, is a member of the Town Manager’s management team.  The Police Chief will be responsible for leading and evaluating Police Department personnel, planning and accomplishing short- and long-term goals, preparing and administering the annual Police Department budget, developing and implementing policies and standards, dealing effectively with problems as they arise, and other special roles as directed by the Town Manager. 

The Police Chief is a highly visible position, and must possess strong leadership skills.  A broad knowledge of and experience in the field of law enforcement is required.  The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • superior performance at a manager / supervisor level position in a law enforcement organization of similar size and/or complexity,
  • a strong commitment to public service and genuine care and concern for the community,
  • innovative, practical, and successful approaches to Police work and Police management,
  • a commitment to continuous improvement and the ability and drive to seize new opportunities,
  • a positive, solution-oriented, teamwork-based, “can-do” attitude,
  • a keen understanding and awareness of the dynamics of a residential / retirement community,
  • effective communication within the Police Department, with the Town Manager, among the Town’s management team, and with the public,

  • emphasis on exceptional customer service, and 
  • a high level of integrity, fairness, transparency, and professional ethics, and the ability to instill those values in others.


The salary range for the Police Chief position is $54,543 - $81,814, and it is expected that the successful candidate will command a starting salary near the midpoint of this salary range, and potentially higher.  The Police Chief will be provided a take-home vehicle.  The Town offers a competitive benefits package, including employer-paid health, life, dental, and vision insurance, vacation and sick leave, NC Local Government Employees Retirement System participation, a 5% 401k contribution, and more.  



The successful candidate will ideally possess a college degree, advanced professional training, and significant law enforcement experience with progressively responsible management / supervisory experience in a public law enforcement agency,  OR  an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience sufficient to fulfill the requirements of this position. 

The position requires certification as a Police Officer through the NC Criminal Justice Education and Standards Commission.  A successful out-of-state candidate will be required to meet the Commission’s requirements outlined at  https://ncdoj.gov/law-enforcement-training/criminal-justice/officer-certification-programs/  within a reasonable time frame to be determined upon accepting the position.
