The County of Surry is accepting applications for a Planning Director. This position will perform professional research and planning services related to the physical geography and land use regulation within the jurisdiction of Surry County. The successful applicant will be responsible for researching, evaluating, developing, and administrating necessary plans, programs and reports. The employee administers and enforces the land use chapters of the Surry County Code of Ordinances (i.e. zoning, land subdivision, mountain ridge protection, etc.). The employee may engage from time to time in transportation planning, historical preservation, voluntary agricultural districts, and other matters assigned by the County Manager. The employee coordinates permitting with the Development Services Department and the Environmental Health section of the Health and Nutrition Center for enforcement of appropriate regulations. Serves as Secretary to the Surry County Planning Board, and the Board of Adjustment. The employee serves as a Surry County Review Officer. Responsible for County government relationships with municipal, state and federal government agencies in planning-related matters such as air, water and land quality. Work is performed under the general supervision of the County Manager.


SALARY RANGE: Grade 76  $52,980 – $90,216


JOB REQUIREMENTSMinimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with preferred major in regional planning, geography, public administration or related field. Experience in land use planning is preferred. Applicant must possess the ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; must deal tactfully with the public. Knowledge of land use planning principles and regulatory practices. Knowledge of geography, demographics, and planning directives of Surry County. Knowledge of state and federal programs and agencies that may be helpful to the County’s planning programs. Ability to establish and maintain appropriate record keeping and data collection systems including GIS.
