Description

New Hanover County is seeking a library director to lead the library system and steward the next phase of the library's growth.  The director will be a visionary and committed professional who will provide forward-thinking leadership that continues to position the Library as an essential player in the educational and cultural life of the community. The successful candidate will be a strategic planner, innovator, team builder, collaborator, and respected professional who will thrive in a growing diverse, urban environment.

Reporting to an Assistant County Manager, the library director is responsible for leadership and vision, overall operations, and day-to-day management of the library. This position directs and evaluates the work of 51 full-time and over 20 part-time staff members. Specialized positions include a library social worker, marketing and technology librarian, and a local history librarian who oversees a dedicated Local History Room and archival collections. Other noteworthy collections include a Library of Things (microscopes, sewing machines, ukuleles and more) and Bookclub in a Bag with more than three dozen titles.

Four public library locations currently serve New Hanover County. These include two large suburban locations with makerspaces, meeting rooms and dedicated program spaces; a storefront library serving southern county island communities, and a library in historic downtown Wilmington. An additional service point will be added this fall with the installation of holds pick-up lockers on the campus of the county’s Senior Resource Center. Our services extend outside our doors with children’s outreach to daycares and NC Pre-K’s. The library’s Community Outreach Reading Empowerment Program (CORE) provides materials to individuals who can't come to the library because of age, health or physical limitations.

This is a period of unprecedented growth for the library. Capital projects underway include the completion of Project Grace, a new, purpose-built, modern facility in downtown Wilmington that brings the Public Library and Cape Fear Museum together and meets the specific and unique needs of both, creating new synergy in services and enhancing the visitor’s experience. Additionally, design for a fifth library facility in the northern part of the county also scheduled to open in 2024, will achieve the Library Advisory Board’s long-range goal of a library within 5 miles of most New Hanover County residents. Interior planning for the new downtown library and architectural design of the Northchase Library will be underway in the coming months.

With over 120,000 library cardholders representing half the county’s population, New Hanover County Public Library is a dynamic library system with enthusiastic local support. The system consistently ranks among the top ten statewide in door count and collection use, and the current year departmental budget of $6 million includes close to $700,000 for physical and electronic materials and resources. A Commission-appointed Library Advisory Board offers insight on strategic planning and policy decisions, while the non-profit Library Foundation provides investment oversight and manages an endowed book fund. An active Friends of the Library group raises community awareness of library services and directly supports staff initiatives.

Our Digital Inclusion Initiative, which will be completed this fall, includes the installation of all new public PC's and laptops managed by Comprise with SAM and SmartALEC solutions to support mobile printing and multiple payment options. Makerspace technology includes both traditional and resin 3D printing. A large selection of STEM activity kits is available for budding programmers.

New Hanover County Public Library’s mission is to enrich and enhance the quality of life of each individual we touch, and our staff is committed to Creating Library Experiences that Matter. With two capital projects as well as innovative programs and services underway this is an exciting time for a forward-thinking library professional to lead a dedicated and talented staff into the future.
