Orange County is accepting applications for the Library Director. This is a Department Director position involving responsibility for all library functions. The work involves the responsibility for leading and managing the activities and services of the Orange County Public Library, fostering collaborative and sustainable partnerships with county and municipal leaders and organizing, planning and implementing library goals and objectives in response to community needs.  An employee in this class directs and monitors operations of Orange County Public Library, which includes long-range strategic planning, budgetary management, development and implementation of programs and services for the residents or Orange County and works with library leadership to maintain a healthy employee culture.
Work is performed under the general direction of the County Manager with considerable leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the performance of duties, both in terms of planning and accomplishing work, and in making decisions regarding the management and administration of the library.   Supervision, both direct and indirect through supervisors, is exercised over the work of other library personnel including professional, paraprofessional, and administrative employees.   Position does related work as required.

$78,246 - $136,062 Annually



Possession of a Master's Degree in Library Science from a library school that is accredited by the American Library Association AND 6 (six) years of professional library experience with progressively responsible experience in a leadership and management capacity, that includes 2 (two) years of direct supervisory experience. 

An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above. A higher degree does not substitute for work experience.

Special Requirements


Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
