GENERAL COUNSEL RECRUITMENT BROCHURE

Cabarrus County Government is seeking a seasoned, well-rounded, innovative, and responsive attorney to serve as General Counsel. You will be at the center of our organization serving as chief in-house legal counsel to all county departments. Additionally, the General Counsel will assist the County Attorney in advising the Board of Commissioners, completing real estate transactions, and negotiating economic incentive grant agreements.

Protecting and preserving the reputation of the County will be of extreme importance to the General Counsel

The ideal candidate will be an articulate, decisive, and highly motivated individual who possesses excellent political acumen and awareness. The successful candidate will be able to thoroughly research and analyze problems, evaluate but not fear risk, develop sound conclusions and decisive recommendations, as well as having the ability to intelligently explain legal concepts to different levels of audiences in a clear and direct manner.

Serving as General Counsel requires advising decision-makers throughout the organization on the legal risks and obligations associated with their duties as employees or board members. The attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters, serving all divisions/departments of Cabarrus County Government. Practice areas will also include litigation management, policy development, administrative agency complaint matters, constitutional matters, responding to Open Records Act requests and subpoenas, and handling other legal matters as needed.

The selected candidate must be familiar with North Carolina Statutes that affect North Carolina county governments and respective departments and agencies, as decisions made by the county attorney must be based on knowledge of and experience with North Carolina law.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Juris Doctorate from a law school accredited by the American Association of Law Schools and extensive experience practicing law in a local government in North Carolina; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. North Carolina county experience is highly desirable. Requires a North Carolina State Bar License, valid North Carolina Driver License, and clear record.

Special Requirements:

Licensed to practice law and in good standing in the State of North Carolina and possession of all other qualifications as prescribed by State Statute. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the state of North Carolina
