Reporting to the City Manager, the Fire Chief functions as the supervisor for the department personnel, with the primary responsibility of assuring that the assigned personnel, apparatus, equipment, and facilities are prepared for appropriate readiness to respond to a variety of life-saving emergency calls. The Fire Chief is primarily responsible for the direction, management, supervision, and coordination of the activities of the paid staff and officers; manages operation, training, general facilities/equipment maintenance, fire prevention, disaster preparedness, public education, and related programs; oversees the recruitment and retention of the staff; serves as command officer when responding to emergency incidents and in day-to-day activities during administrative hours. The Fire Chief coordinates assigned activities with all teams, other departments, and outside agencies and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support.

Considerable experience developing and managing fire department budgets, including making strategic budget decisions and working with the City Manager.

An innovative leader and manager with experience in directing an organization through new or updated processes and procedures. Possesses the ability to assess the readiness levels of the fire department in relation to changes and the skills to determine the impact of those changes as well as the ability to create and implement action plans to facilitate change.

A confident leader with excellent communication (written and oral), along with interpersonal and management skills that allow for easy delivery of information to all fire department staff members.

Capacity and experience to work within a combination department to ensure that our part-time and full-time staff receive the needed focus.

A proven record of successfully managing, coaching, and building teams through collaboration and teamwork by setting expectations and holding members accountable for results.



Compensation & Benefits

This executive leadership position will be offered at a hiring range of $65,000 –

$72,000 depending on certification, experience, and education, plus the following competitive benefits:

Education & Experience

A combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills necessary will be considered. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

 I.          Required

  • Fifteen (15) years of fire service experience and a minimum of ten (10) years ofthat experience in a supervisory (Chief Office or Company Officer)
  • Certified North Carolina
  • NC Emergency Medical
  • NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 &
  • Certified Fire Officer Level
  • North Carolina Fire Chief 101

II.   Recommended & Preferred

  • A.S. Degree in Fire Science or Fire Protection or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Public or Business Administration; and
  • Certified NC Fire Officer Level
