The Southwestern Commission (SWC) headquartered in Sylva, NC, seeks an Executive Director.

The SWC is a multi-county-municipality local government planning and development organization, one of the 16 Councils of Government serving local governments in the state. The SWC serves Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon and Swain Counties, the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians, and the 17 municipalities within the region. Core federal and state programs administered by the SWC include: Area Agency on Aging (Older Americans Act), Workforce Development Board (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act), Economic Development District and Revolving Loan Fund (US Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration), Local Development District (Appalachian Regional Commission), Rural Planning Organization (North Carolina Department of Transportation) and other special projects as required or requested by local governments.

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall supervision and management of the SWC.

A 15-member board governs the agency and is comprised of elected officials appointed by member local governments. The agency was established in 1965, has an approximate operating budget of $1 million (w/ pass-through of $5-7 million), and employs a staff of 15. 

 

 

Salary

Annual salary range is $84,969 to $147,201 depending on qualifications and experience; excellent benefits provided. 

Qualifications

A master’s degree is preferred, in Public Administration and Management, Urban/Regional Planning, Public Organization or Finance, with a minimum of five years of executive managerial experience in closely related fields. Competitive applicants will possess strong written and verbal communication and facilitation skills combined with strong understanding of North Carolina local government processes.
