An employee in this class plans, organizes, and directs the operations of the County Emergency Medical Service, Emergency Management Program, Fire Marshal’s Office, and other emergency functions. Work includes: preparing the annual budgets of these programs; coordinating the activities of governmental and non-governmental agencies providing emergency services; developing and implementing emergency responses, comprehensive emergency plans, or evacuations plans; and educating the public as to correct responses in cases of emergencies. Considerable tact and courtesy are required in dealing with officials on the local and state level in meeting with the general public.

A minimum of two year degree in Emergency Services and ten years experience in Emergency Services, with 5 years shift supervisory experience is desired. Supplementary training: NIMS ICS 300-400, preferred Management Institute, NC EMT-P certification; background in fire and rescue services, hazmat operations. Other skill and abilities: Emergency Management Certification; fire and rescue experience or EMS extended certifications; grant writing experience. Must have valid drivers’ license and be insurable at regular rates under the County’s liability insurance.

Special Requirements

Must have good computer skills, oral and written communication skills, public presentation skills, and good supervisory skills and ability to effectively manage. A four year degree or Masters in Emergency Services or related field with law enforcement, death investigation, Emergency Management level certifications 1 through 4, and experience in Haz-Mat operations and technical rescue is desirable.
