Alexander County is currently seeking experienced, professional, energetic, outgoing, & action-oriented candidates for the position of County Manager. Alexander County is a county with 36,325 residents, a significant manufacturing base, and beautiful outdoor opportunities that include the Brushy Mountains, Rocky Face Park, Lake Hickory, and Lake Lookout. than 20 minutes from Interstates 40 and 77 and is part of the Hickory Metro that is growing and thriving. The county recently made significant public investments with several major projects, including water/wastewater expansion, parks development, and economic development/industrial park construction.

The County Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the county with 321 full-time, 148 part-time, and 257 seasonal employees. The FY21-22 Budget totals $65.7 million with a General Fund of $53.6 million. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • strong interpersonal skills;
  • the ability to develop and manage a budget with multiple capital projects and collaborate with various partners;
  • the ability and inclination to get out of the office and connect with the public, employees, businesses, and community organizations;
  • the ability to communicate well with the Board of Commissioners;
  • the ability to effectively mentor and manage staff ; and
  • ability to develop strategic goals and projects with the Board of Commissioners, county departments, county partners, and stakeholders.


The hiring range is $160,000-$175,000, depending on qualifications, with a full benefits package.


The position requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation with a bachelor’s or master’s degree (preferred) in public administration or a related field, as well as 5-8 years of experience as a local government manager or department head.
