Description

Assistant Town Manager/Community Services Director

Town of Hillsborough, NC (pop. 10,000). The position supervises the planning & economic development, public works (streets & solid waste), public space & sustainability, and stormwater operations. There is excellent communication and collaboration within this team, between their divisions, and other town departments. In addition to supervising these operations the assistant manager/director is the lead on a variety of responsibilities and projects that arise within community services, assigned by the town manager, or emerge as town board priorities (e.g., affordability, affordable housing-related matters in town, grant management, taking the lead when gaps arise, staff is at capacity, etc.). Serves as acting manager when the town manager is not available, as well as represents the town during local, regional, state, and national matters. The town is experiencing significant growth. Local government experience is essential for this position. Prior experience in a smaller town, city, or county is desired for this position as that perspective is critical in understanding the scale, limited resources, and high level of customer service expected in Hillsborough. While the successful candidate does not need to have expertise in community services’ four operational areas, familiarity and/or an ability to learn these functions is expected.
