General Statement of Duties

The Town of Wake Forest Engineering Department seeks to hire two Engineering professionals ranging from Assistant Engineer to Senior Civil Engineer.

A Department committed to excellence and service, we are responsible for the review and inspection of new development, operation and maintenance of existing Town infrastructure in the areas of Transportation, Construction, Inspection, Stormwater and Environmental Engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports required duties for multiple programs, including the Erosion and Sediment Control program, required for compliance under NPDES MS4 Stormwater Regulations.
    • Researches and interprets compliance provisions with complex regulatory requirements, analyzes permits and makes recommendations for program changes and improvements.
    • Coordinates with the State, EPA and other groups related to negotiating permit changes, compliance and requirements.
    • Interface with regulatory agencies and divisional personnel as required.
    • Participate in annual compliance audits and Powell Bill submission.
  • Supports the Town’s Locally Administered Projects Program (LAPP).
  • Develops or reviews plans and construction drawings for Wake Forest’s standards, specifications, ordinances, policies and Federal and State law.
    • Reviewing erosion and sediment control measures, floodplain studies associated with development in floodplains, and FEMA Letters of Map Revisions
    • Reviewing transportation design standards and Traffic Impact Analysis reports
    • Provides input and technical support by request to the Technical Review Committee.
  • Meets with contractors and reviews and explains construction requirements; monitors progress and quality of work and recommends when payment and bond releases should be made and when completed projects should be accepted by the Town.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of the Town’s transportation related plans such as bicycle, pedestrian, transportation and open space and greenways.
  • Attend and delivers presentation, performs public outreach, prepares agendas, reports, cost estimates, computations, specifications, construction schedules, and engineering drawings as well as other documentation and communication materials. 
  • Responds to residential request and concerns via phone, email, or on-site.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering
  • Considerable knowledge of GIS technology
  • General knowledge of budgeting and purchasing procedures
  • Ability to work and coordinate on a multi-jurisdictional basis
  • Ability to interpret and analyze technical and statistical information and to prepare and present technical oral and written reports
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials and other agencies, and the general public. 



Salary commensurate with experience


Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, bio-ag engineering, or related field, and some experience in the engineering field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Engineering certification ranging from EIT to PE.  Valid North Carolina driver license.

Optional Certifications

•Certified Floodplain Manager

•Certification in North Carolina BMP Design & Inspections

•Certification in NCDOT Level I-III, CPESC

•AICP certification

  •  Completion of the substance abuse testing required by the Town.  Be advised that you have 48 hours after accepting our conditional offer to report for the drug screen.   
  •  Completion of a Background Screening.
