School of Government at UNC Chapel Hill

UNC School of Government

The School of Government, located at UNC-Chapel Hill, helps public officials understand and improve state and local government. Faculty and staff provide expertise and advice to county officials on a wide range of subject matters, and are frequent speakers at NCACC educational events. The Local Elected Leaders Academy is housed at the School of Government.

The School of Government and the Association enjoy a lengthy history of partnership for the betterment of county government. The Association’s first full-time Executive Director, J. Alexander McMahon, was working as assistant director of the Institute of Government at the time of his appointment in 1958. The Association’s Raleigh headquarters, the Albert Coates Local Government Center, is named in honor of the Institute’s founder.

National Association of Counties (NACo)

The National Association of Counties (NACo) represents the nation’s 3,068 counties, parishes and boroughs. Offices are located in Washington, D.C. Almost all of North Carolina’s 100 counties are members.


North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM)

The N.C. League of Municipalities (NCLM) is the NCACC’s sister Association representing North Carolina cities, towns, villages and unified governments.

The North Carolina City & County Management Association seeks to improve city and county government, maintain and develop the professional competence of its members, and encourage and support professional general management government in North Carolina.
