County revenue estimation calculator

The NCACC is proud to announce the creation of a county revenue estimate calculator as part of its centennial celebration.

County governments in North Carolina face extraordinary financial challenges in the years ahead. Using this simple educational tool, citizens, businesses and North Carolina county leaders are able to review and manipulate different choices over future revenues for each county. By using the tool to increase and decrease a number of revenue options, users can, for example, see:

  • the impact on any particular county of an expansion of the sales tax base;
  • total revenue generated or lost with incremental adjustments to the property tax rate; and/or
  • the yield from a local option sales tax, land transfer tax, or impact fee.

The calculator's projections and numbers are based on county financial information provided for the 2005-06 fiscal year to the Department of the State Treasurer. The tool was developed over many months by Karl Smith, an assistant professor of public economics and government at the School of Government at UNC-Chapel Hill, in collaboration with the Institute for Emerging Issues at N.C. State University.

Please report problems with the calculator to Jason King at jason.king@ncacc.org or (919) 715-0045.
