Goals team members participate in summit

Two members of the Association staff strategic goals team charged with facilitating regional and intergovernmental collaboration participated in a summit focused on collaboration and school facility siting on May 3 in Forsyth County.
Goal team leader and NCACC Assistant General Counsel Paul Meyer and Financial Administrator Sylvia Clifton attended the summit. Team members are exploring the possibly of holding a track of workshops on collaborative efforts at the Association’s Annual Conference in September.
Paul Meyer served on the summit steering committee, and a number of county officials – along with school board members, school system leaders, elected and appointed municipal officials, and representatives from the private sector – served as summit delegates, including:
- Cabarrus County Manager John Day
- Guilford County Chair Carolyn Coleman and Commissioner Paul Gibson
- Johnston County Commissioner DeVan Barbour and Manager Rick Hester
- Union County Manager Mike Shalati and Planning Director Dick Black
The Center for Urban and Regional Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hosted the summit and stated three desired outcomes:
- Clarification of the interdependence across school location decision, land-use planning, local government finances, and the character of communities.
- Appreciation for strategies, tools and techniques that can support collaboration among school districts, counties and municipalities when selecting sites for new schools.
- Steps advancing collaborative efforts to be taken by summit attendents in their respective communities.
The summit was convened with a grant from Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.
