Fiscal Summary of Counties

The Association obtains audited expenditure and revenue data from the N.C. Department of the State Treasurer, and publishes annually the Fiscal Summary of North Carolina Counties, a compendium that provides comparative financial information about N.C. county governments.

Surveys

The Association conducts a number of surveys to gather financial and programmatic information from counties. The tax rate survey is conducted every June to ascertain newly adopted tax rates. A more detailed budget and tax survey is conducted each  fall to collect in-depth information on the fiscal status of North Carolina counties, including school appropriations, effective tax rates, etc.

The Association maintains a State of the Counties database that includes data for each county in numerous categories, such as census data, crime data, education data and wage and income data. This database is updated frequently as new data become available.

County elections methods is updated in conjunction with publication of the directory each January and details how county commissioners are elected (at-large or district) and the number of commissioners in each county.

After commissioner elections in even-numbered years, county election results are compiled, which reveal the demographic breakdown in terms of political party, race and gender of each Board of Commissioners. The Association has historical data on county elections to 1974. In addition, periodic ad hoc surveys gather information on specific topics on interest.
