Property tax reform. Transportation funding. Lottery disbursements. Stormwater rules. Water supply.

The upcoming short session is expected to be a busy one for counties, as these issues and others will be discussed while the General Assembly is in town this spring and summer.

The Association will once again be holding a series of district meetings around the state this April to update county officials on all of these issues and provide information on other Association services and programs. Legislative staff will be on hand to answer questions about any legislative issues that are expected to arise during the 2008 session, which convenes May 13.

NCACC President David Young welcomes attendees to the April 2 district meeting in Wake County.

The Association is particularly interested in gathering feedback from county officials about a county role in funding the state’s transportation needs. The 21st Century Transportation Committee is examining the state’s transportation needs and is interested in finding ways to fill an estimated $65 billion gap in transportation funding for the next 20 years. Each meeting will include an interactive discussion on this issue.

The sessions offer county officials an excellent opportunity to provide feedback to legislative staff about county impacts of proposed legislation and to interact with other county officials from around their region. Each meeting begins at 10 a.m. and will conclude at 12:30 p.m. with a lunch. The registration fee for each meeting is $25, which includes lunch and all materials.

In addition to the legislative briefing, Association staff will also provide an update on the ongoing State of the Counties report, an initiative of NCACC President David Young of Buncombe County, and LELA – the new Local Elected Leaders Academy program offered in conjunction with the School of Government at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
