CIGNA, UNC Health Care reach agreement

The NCACC Risk Management Pools is pleased to report that the University of North Carolina Health Care System and CIGNA HealthCare of North Carolina have negotiated a two-year contract that takes effect Friday, Jan. 1, 2010. County Health Plan participants will continue to have uninterrupted access to inpatient and outpatient services rendered at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill and Raleigh’s Rex HealthCare, as well as UNC and Rex physicians’ groups.

Dr. William L. Roper, dean of UNC’s School of Medicine and chief executive officer of UNC Health Care, said in a statement released Dec. 29, “It was very important for UNC Health Care and CIGNA to work together to ensure continued coverage for the thousands of patients who choose us for their care, we take our responsibility to the people of North Carolina very seriously and are pleased to make this announcement.”

The County Health Plan provides coverage to approximately 12,000 employees of North Carolina counties or county related entities. In a released statement, Charles Pitts, president of CIGNA HealthCare of North Carolina said, “We are particularly pleased that part of the contract resolution includes the identification of areas to work together to improve service to the community.”
