Professional Presentation Coaching
Professional Presentation Coaching with Joy Javits
Speed coaching and sign-up table on the 2nd floor; individual and small group coaching sessions in Wentworth (2nd floor) at select times
- Reserve your time before conference (sign up will also be available on-site)
Joy Javits comes from a family steeped in public service. Her father, Jacob K. Javits, was a United States Senator from New York and an extraordinary public speaker. Joy then developed her deep understanding of public speaking while a student at Brown University, a teacher at Yale University, and a lecturer at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Years of work in New York's professional theater, at Duke University Medical Center and UNC Hospitals (where she continues to coordinate cultural programs), and with the government as Chairman of the Orange County Arts Commission, have brought Joy to her current service for those "in the public eye."
Stop by Joy’s table on the second floor for a “speed coaching” session, or sign up for a more in-depth coaching session that will be held during workshop blocks on Friday.
Bring a speech you have given or plan to give. Joy will provide feedback on your presentation of that speech, coaching you on:
- how you stand;
- your gestures;
- the use of your head, eyes, hands and body;
- audience engagement;
- your timing; and
- the clarity and power of your words and ideas.
Alternatively, you may bring a speech that you intend to write, and Joy will work with you on its content, form and presentation.
Coaching for small groups
During small group sessions, Joy will work with you and other attendees on how you “come across” – the initial impression you make through your handshake and body carriage; and the volume, speed and clarity of your words.
Sign up for an individual coaching session, or a small-group coaching session during the following times: Friday (10:15 – 11:30 a.m., 1:30 – 2:45 p.m., or 3:15 – 4:30 p.m.); or Saturday (10:30 – 11:45 a.m.)
Sign up for 5 good minutes or simply drop by Joy’s table on the second floor. Joy will provide feedback on how you present yourself, and her initial impression of you – what is great, and what you might like to redirect.
Available times: Thursday (1:30 – 4:30 p.m.); or Friday (9:45 – 10:15 a.m.; 11:30 a.m. – noon; 1 – 1:30 p.m.; or 2:45 – 3:15 p.m.)
The One Hundred County Quilt
The “One Hundred County Quilt” will also be on display near Joy Javits’ presentation coaching table. Before celebrating the opening of the NC Women’s and NC Children’s hospitals in September 2001, Joy was tapped to lead a project that would represent all 100 counties served by the hospitals. The response was enthusiastic, and along with drawings of their county flag by children, and writings by women, a brilliant quilt made by many hands was the centerpiece at the celebration.
The quilt is available for display in your county! Reserve a month on its tour at Joy’s table.
